The super-soft wool Genevieve has selected for the Alford is spun by a highly respected UK spinner and guaranteed mulesing-free. It has the beautiful characteristics of traditional Shetland wool with a soft touch, providing both comfort and warmth. The secret to its luxurious handle is that it comes from the ‘first clip’ of the lamb – an initial shear known for its unrivalled softness. Finer and more expensive, it produces a garment of exceptionally high quality without compromising on its authentic Shetland character.

Once knitted, it’s then brushed using the teasel thistle – a rarely-used specialist technique that further enhances the sumptuously soft hand-feel. Completely natural and highly effective, the teasel thistle has for centuries been used to brush and soften yarn. By elongating the fibres, it not only creates a beautifully soft feel, but lends the wool a relaxed and subtly felted quality that no man-made brush could match.
