GENEVIEVE SWEENEY LEITHEN CASHMERE SWEATER IN RED
Named after the town in which the first GS Hand Intarsia was knitted, the Leithen embraces geometric patterns inspired by 1920s abstract art. Showcasing a seamless fusion of contemporary design and artisan skill, our Leithen sweater is spun from pure cashmere and features hand intarsia diagonal detailing presented in an eye-catching geometric style that’s become a signature of the brand.
This sweater expertly balances the sharp chevron lines and dramatic colour contrast of the deep red accent poppy and navy melange by pairing them with more restrained mid-grey and off white. Finely crafted using the most luxurious Scottish cashmere, Genevieve’s decision to allow the yarn to ‘break in’ naturally prevents long-term pilling. While this means it doesn’t feel as soft as most shop-bought cashmere at first touch, its exceptional softness will come through within a couple of wears.
GS: “The Leithen hand intarsia is created by laying the cashmere yarn onto a needle bed by hand, following a chart – almost like paint by numbers. Each square of the chart represents a stitch, and by then twisting the neighbouring colours together you create a seamless effect with no loops on the back. Personally, I love the sharp geometric lines and slight raised stitches you can achieve with this beautiful technique.”
This intarsia can take up to 7 hours to knit by a highly skilled hand intarsia knitter. The Leithen is hand linked by a local family run mill and washed in the soft local Borders waters to give you the highest quality finish.
The Leithen is testament to Genevieve’s commitment to slow, mindful fashion. Firstly, the cashmere fibres are spun at an ethically-driven mill on the banks of Loch Leven; then a team of highly-experienced artisan knitters based in the Scottish Borders complete the complex hand intarsia detailing by hand – a painstaking process that can take up to fourteen hours. The Leithen story concludes with each piece being hand-linked and washed in the naturally soft and pure Scottish waters of the River Teviot to gently open the cashmere fibres. This not only guarantees consistency of colour but enhances the luxurious handle too. Environmentally friendly dyes mean this water can be safely returned to the river afterwards.
With its high-impact design, luxurious hand-crafted construction and exceptional attention to detail, the Leithen sweater should be permitted to take sartorial centre stage. Instantly elevate off-duty style by teaming it with your staple jeans and sneakers; then switch these out for silk skirt and heeled boots to glide effortlessly into the evening.
