Introducing the latest addition to our collection of sweaters: the Brook textured lambswool sweater, available in three beautiful contrast marls. This is the perfect knit for layering all year round, crafted from super-fine and mid-weight slub lambswool twisted together to create a chunkier yarn that is soft and cosy to the touch. Dressed up, worn over a silk slip dress or dressed down with a simple white t-shirt and jeans, the Brook sweater is a versatile, mid-to-chunky knit that you’ll reach for time and time again.
As seen worn by @stylonylon styled with that perfect front tuck.
The slub lambswool marl is spun in Scotland in one of the oldest Scottish yarn mills on the shore of Loch Leven. The slub is spun and twisted on a very old and slow machine to create regular slubs, spinning the yarn thick to thin, thick to thin to give it a regular texture. This means that only a limited amount can be made each year, perfectly in keeping with our slow fashion philosophy. The mill maintains these machines rather than upgrading to newer models as they produce consistently high-quality yarn – this dedication to quality over quantity really resonates with the Geneveive Sweeney brand.
For around five years now, I have been designing with lambswool that has Responsible Wool Standards (RWS) which helps to protect the sheep that supply the wool and the land on which they graze. Wool is my favourite material to work with, as it is a dream to knit with and is also natural, renewable, recyclable and biodegradable. It biodegrades in soil, adding nutrients back to the earth. It also biodegrades in water, meaning that it does not contribute to microfibre and plastic pollution like other fabrics. With the responsible rearing of sheep, wool can help to protect, restore and reset the balance of nature. Hence, why I love working with it!
The silhouette of the sweater features a drop shoulder and slouch fit, with a dropped hem at the back and a side split. This relaxed shape feels casual on first impressions, but when worn with a pair of leather trousers or a silk dress, it is instantly elevated. It adds a contemporary edge to an otherwise formal outfit.
Brook is available in a choice of three colours: charcoal and natural, spiced red and natural, and electric blue and natural melanges. Each one is given my unique twist of colourful marl in contrast stripes on the cuffs and back hem of the sweater, creating an extra special piece of knitwear that will stand out in your wardrobe.
Every element of making the Brook sweaters is carried out in the UK. The sweater is crafted with fully-fashioned knitting for the highest quality finish – which also reduces wastes by knitting the fabric shape of the garment. It is then milled to accentuate the softness of the lambswool slub. Each individual sweater is hand-linked with conventional linking, a heritage skill which you can read more about here. Every detail, such as the labels and neckline edges are hand sewn, with a great attention to detail and care. The knitting itself is completed on new industrial machines, but the finishing is done with traditional and extremely skilled techniques carried out by those with years of experience.
If you’re looking for a made-in-Britain sweater to keep you warm during the colder months, that you can also reach for to layer over summer, Brook is the perfect option. Soft, light-weight and cosy, and with endless styling potential.
